340 | Rebecca Newberger Goldstein on What Matters and Why It Matters

At any given moment, an uncountable number of events are happening, but only some of them matter to us. What does it mean for something to matter, and more importantly, what does it mean for us to matter -- to ourselves as well as to others? The need to matter can be motivation to do great things, but it can also be a reason for people to come into conflict. Philosopher/novelist Rebecca Newberger Goldstein explores this issue in her new book The Mattering Instinct: How Our Deepest Longing Drives Us and Divides Us.

  1. I disagree. The randomness is what’s so great about the show. I’m interested in some more than others , but this was never meant to be like Sam Harris et al.

  2. This was a fascinating conversation that had me thinking of all sorts of related things. First of all, the story of Alice James was so sad, and reminded me that one of her contemporaries, Florence Nightingale, wrote an essay called “Cassandra,” complaining that middle-class Victorian women were expected to behave in a way that totally throttled any drive they had to do anything creative. Nightingale used language about herself that was almost identical to “heroic striver.”

And a comment Sean made about some of his colleagues reminded me of Aristotle saying that the ideal life was one of contemplation. My response was, “Well, that’s nice for you, Aristotle, but a lot of people would make another choice.”

  3. Typically a big fan of mindscape, especially the episodes that are outside the box. However this episode just did not hit the marker with me. Ms. Goldstein seemed to circle around answers without answering the question, I lost count how many times she said “you know”. Perhaps nerves on her end, but this is just my opinion. Still love the podcast, still a fan.
