AMA | June 2022

Welcome to the June 2022 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! We are inaugurating a slightly different publication schedule, in which these monthly AMAs will take the place of one of the regular Monday episodes, rather than being in addition to all of them. A slight tweak that will hopefully make my obligations a little more manageable.

These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). I take the large number of questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable size -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

  1. Love your podcast – good to have something that makes you think.

A mathematical observation on the multiverse discussion. The number of actual universes under any of the models would be a countable infinity since they’re individual items (Aleph Null in the jargon – corresponding to the integers and rational numbers). If any of the values determining the characteristics of the universes (locations, energies, or cosmological constants) is a real number, the number of possible universes is a higher order infinity. In that case, the odds of any one universe being duplicated are infinitely small. As to values being close enough to be effectively identical, my sense would be that complexity theory would apply to rule that out.
