256 | Kelly and Zach Weinersmith on Building Cities on the Moon and Mars

There is an undeniable romance in the idea of traveling to, and even living in, outer space. In recent years, a pragmatic justification has become increasingly popular: the Earth is vulnerable to threats both natural and human-made, and it seems only prudent to spread life to other locations in case a disaster befalls our home planet. But how realistic is such a grand ambition? The wife-and-husband team of Kelly and Zack Weinersmith have tackled this question from a dizzying number of angles, from aeronautics and biology to law and psychology. The result is their new book, A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through? It provides an exceptionally clear-eyed view of the challenges and opportunities ahead.

  1. YESSS!!!

Hello Kelly (aka the “Dirty Minded One”),

YOU are the “Investigative Journalist” I’ve been waiting 2+ Decades for!

    Think:
SEX, NASA, Neil Armstrong, 9/11/US Military, 1984/Big Government Censorship, NBC/SNL, The Internet, and Wikipedia.

Neil Armstrong hosted Saturday Night Live around 9/11 and his sketches were unbelievably funny.
Not only are clips from that episode hard to find, any reference that he ever hosted the show are hard to find.
I have found references in the past on his Wikipedia page that he was a host but they continue to get deleted.
There is no reference about it on his wiki page at the moment and a quick Internet search reveals nothing.
With a little deeper dive I found this:
    https://vimeo.com/31798980

    It is SEX & NASA.

This topic has always made me feel like a conspiracy theorist.
Who monitors the Internet and deletes anything related to this episode?
Who went to NBC/SNL and forbade them to post or reference anything about it and why?
NASA? The Military? Military recruiters? Conservative NBC executives (he played a homosexual in one of the skits)?
    Who and Why?
    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Great episode.
    Thank-you.
    Wishes,
    John

  2. This is a fabulous episode! The humor and candor of Kelly and Zach is so much fun. I’m still listening as I write this. Great show!

  3. to add to my previous comment, I realized I neglected to praise the expertise and ease with the subject matter that Kelly and Zach have developed. once again, great episode, one of my favorites!

  4. I am a big fan of the podcast, but that episode was dissapointing. The discussion was a little disorganized and quite anecdotal. Add to that the constant giggling of all three participants and the loud quacking voice of one of them, and I just could not finish it. Too bad, the topic is fascinating and, whatever one thinks about it, Elon Musk’s space programme has made it a topic for serious debate. I hope Sean Caroll gets to revisit it in another episode of his great podcast series.
