AMA | February 2026

Welcome to the February 2026 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

Note that Mindscape now has a new hosting provider, Libsyn. (Actually a return home, as that was my first host when Mindscape was launched.) Things seem to be going smoothly, but let us know if there are any technical glitches.

  1. Respectfully, for someone living in a harsh climate with extreme temperature variations within the year, Celsius makes a lot more sense.

When it gets 0°C outside, you know you have to go change summer tires to winter tires, or you’re going to skid and crash sooner or later. Easy to remember.

+10°C is somewhat cold — wear a light coat or something. +20°C is warm enough to wear light summer clothing. +30°C is pretty hot, don’t stay out of the shade too long. +40°C is hot enough to avoid going outside unless really necessary. +45°C (the worst I’ve experienced) — you get the idea.

Same with negative degrees. -10°C — it’s okay to go play outside for hours wearing light winter clothing. When it’s -20°C you have to wear something heavier (probably put on more wool), but it’s also fine to spend hours outside. With -30°C, better don’t spend too much time outside. With -40°C, stay inside unless absolutely necessary (with this temperature you can easily freeze off the tip of your nose without noticing it — I still can’t feel mine years later). -50°C, the worst I’ve seen over my life, you also get the idea.

And both 0°C and 100°C are useful in the kitchen.

  2. DEAR DR. CARROLL:

I listened to your podcast today on Fraser Cain’s recommendation. It was quite stimulating, I thoroughly share your concerns about the Trump administration and the authoritarian direction the country is moving in, but I shall also TRY to be optimistic that we will eventually win. Already the cracks are showing in MAGA world.

  3. So why did you give a presentation to Jeffrey Epstein in 2010? You were introduced to each other through Al Seckel. Jeff was already arrested for sex offenses in 2009. Did you not look him up?

  4. I always have trouble understanding the “fine-tuned” questions. People point to evidence that we exist and then suggest that the universe is fine-tuned.
But it seems more likely that WE are the ones that are fine-tuned by physical limits and chemistry and evolution in order to exist.
