AMA | April 2022

Welcome to the April 2022 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). I take the large number of questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable size -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

  1. Hi,

regarding the spectrum of positronium, the analogy with the earth and the sun is slightly misleading IMHO. The earth and sun’s mass (~”gravitational charge”) are vastly unequal, however the proton and electron’s electric charge are of course exactly the same, modulo the sign. The electric charges involved in positronium are exactly the same as for hydrogen. The spectrum ends up being not the same because the masses come in via the effective mass m_a*m_b/(m_a+m_b) when solving a two-body-problem, which in the case of hydrogen just reduces to the electron mass due to the proton mass being vastly larger, in case of positronium you get a factor of 1/2 since the masses of both particles are the same, so your factual statement holds that the spectra are not the same, however they are related by a factor of 1/2.
