AMA | April 2023

Welcome to the April 2023 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

  1. A very happy ‘Hello’
So, I have just been catching up on Febuary’s AMA episode and since the comment section is shown as closed, I will just leave this here.
In said AMA in Febuary, Mr. Carroll has uttered his slight confusion about the possible reason why any of his audience members would listen to his podcast to fall asleep, since he would automatically want to stay awake when something interesting is being talked about. Therefore, I feel the need to propose the hypothesis, that it has nothing to do with the desinterest of the listener or even the quality of the content . Rather, I think it is quite possible it helps people to calm down and fall asleep, because Mr. Carroll simply has a very nice voice . Since this is merely an observation based on personal experience, this would have to be tested in a bigger sample, of course. The ‘too interesting to sleep’ argument however, is a valid point, which is why I only ever use episodes that I have already listened to in a more awake state to accompany my journey into blissfull unconsciousness.
    Kind regards
PS: It helps a great deal though, that this very nice voice is usually talking about equally nice topics and not some, in reference of the latest episode, bullshit

  2. Little clarification:
    Oh Dear,
When I was referring to ‘ the latest episode’ and ‘ bullshit’ in my previous attempt to explain why people listen to Mindscape to fall asleep, I did not refer to episode 232, which is indeed the latest podcast episode, but episode 108 with Carl Bergstrom, which randomly happened to be the next episode in my playlist and that I had not listened to before.
So sorry, if it was assumed I somehow implied Andy Clark was talking bullshit

  3. Dear Sean,
I’m so sorry to hear about the twisted repercussion your previous AMA had on YouTube. I sympathise with your carefulness and mindfulness, always striving to convey your thoughts in the most accurate way as they can possibly be conveyed. That can be quite a struggle sometimes, as it depends not only on the person conveying (or striving to convey) the message, but also on the receiver. I’m sure you know this all quite well, but on that note I recently came across this interesting article in Scientific American: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/people-differ-widely-in-their-understanding-of-even-a-simple-concept-such-as-the-word-penguin1/
First time I post anything here, I only found out about your podcast about a year ago or so, but knew some of your work since the book “The Big Picture” came out. Congratulations for the great work you’ve been doing.
