AMA | September 2024

Welcome to the September 2024 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

  1. It is said that the Cat in the Box is in a Superposition until you make an observation. What if the box is never opened for all enertinity? Nothing can ever open the box ever. Is this a measurement that is considered in all possible outcomes? A 3rd direction like left or right in a forked road? How does this effect Quantum Entanglement? Is there a dark particle that always remain at the point the particles that are entangled originated before they diverged?

  2. If ou Universe is currently expanding over and replacing as previous one, then, could Dark Energy be the “ashes” (for lack of a better word) of that previous universe since it is uniform throught and be the cause of current Infation?

  3. There is an important sense in which ranked choice voting is strictly simpler (or at least easier) for the voter than winner-takes-all: All winner-takes-all ballots are valid ranked choice ballots. This isn’t just a theoretical point, in Australia, which has ranked choice voting, if you tick a single box just as you would in winner-takes-all your vote will count exactly as if you had numbered 1 in the ticked box and left all other boxes blank. Yes, if you don’t vote for the first or second place candidate your vote will be exhausted and not count, but this is true under winner-takes-all too. In fact, if everyone in a ranked choice election voted as though it were winner-takes-all, you get the same outcome as in winner-takes-all. For this reason, I think the argument that winner-takes-all’s simplicity makes it preferable is extremely weak. Its actually strictly easier to submit a valid vote with your intended meaning under ranked choice.

  4. The answer to the population growth question was surprisingly flippant. The concern is not that we won’t have enough people on earth or in industrialized countries. The concern is that declining fertility in those countries will lead to an ageing population, which ultimately can have significant social and economic consequences. That you couldn’t care less about this is a bit concerning.

  5. Doing some studying on my own and I’m struggling with how entanglement doesn’t count as a measurement in the context trying to understand the paradox of the epr paper and bells theorem. Does entanglement impart properties onto to the particles, isn’t that disturbing them in some way or determining their properties if they’re created for the experiment ?
